This summer, Manchester United is reportedly interested in signing N’Golo Kante. Manager Erik ten Hag wants to bolster his team’s midfield by adding two more players.
The acquisition of two new central midfielders is said to be at the top of the Dutchman’s wish list for his time at Old Trafford, particularly in light of the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic from the club.
In spite of the fact that Frenkie de Jong has been linked with a move to United in the past, the club is currently showing interest in Kante as a potential candidate for the defensive midfield position.
According to The Guardian, Manchester United are mulling over a transfer for the midfielder, but Chelsea have stated that they have no intention of selling the World Cup champion despite his recent history of injury.
Thomas Tuchel recently expressed his frustration at Kante’s problems this season, which caused him to miss a total of 16 games this season, and he compared Kante to players such as Virgil van Dijk and even Kylian Mbappe. Tuchel made these comparisons in a recent interview.
Regarding the now-retired midfielder who formerly played for Leicester City, Tuchel stated, “I think he is our key, key, key player; but key, key, key players need to be on the pitch.”
“He only participates in forty percent of the games. Therefore, finishing in third place is probably nothing short of a miracle for us.
“Because he is our Mo Salah, he is our Van Dijk, he is our [Kevin] De Bruyne. He is both Neymar and Kylian Mbappé for us; he is the player who makes the difference. And it’s a huge problem if you only have him for forty percent of the time.”
In spite of this and the assertions made by the Guardian, the Athletic has reported that Chelsea would actually be willing to part ways with Kante, and that he might not cost as much as many people think he would.
The 31-year-old player’s current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2019, and given the club in west London’s financial situation, it is possible that they will decide to cash in on his services while they still can.
The Blues have also been much more ruthless and efficient than their Premier League rivals in recent years when it comes to getting rid of ageing players. This is something that has been a trend for the Blues.
United would need to conduct a cost-benefit analysis to determine whether the low price for someone of Kante’s undoubted brilliance and experience is worth the risk for someone who has been injured recently.
If it didn’t work out, they would be left regretting another move for an aging midfielder from Chelsea, just like they did with Matic, who had some great moments at United but became too slow and leggy to play regularly as time went on. If it didn’t work out, they would be left regretting another move for an aging midfielder from Chelsea.
The absence of a defensive midfielder in United’s roster presents an opportunity for another central midfielder, Kalvin Phillips, to step in and fill the role, despite the fact that doing so presents some challenges.
Philips is a lifelong fan of Leeds United and is unlikely to want to move to their hated rivals across the Pennines. However, this does not rule out a move down the M62, as Manchester City are also said to be interested in acquiring his services.
